Review: Reigns: Three Kingdoms - A Medieval Chinese Adventure

Reigns: Three Kingdoms offers an immersive and captivating experience, bling the vast history of a classic novel with engaging gameplay. The game combines the elements of managing an empire, forging alliances, and online multiplayer through easy-to-understand turn-based battles in a card strategy format.

This title takes inspiration from the epic Chinese historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms and is set during China's Warring States period at the of the Han dynasty my nostalgia was triggered as I felt transported back to my days playing Dynasty Warriors, a game based on this literary masterpiece. My favorite characters are Guan Yu, Zhang Fei, and Zhao Yun from Shu kingdom.

Naturally, when I allied with these characters in Reigns: Three Kingdoms, the game instantly won me over. However, it's worth noting that the game isn't necessarily historically accurate. While you'll still find yourself swiping left or right to make decisions on alliances, peasant welfare, and even religious conversions, its cartoonish art style adds a humorous twist.

The adventure begins with the Yellow Turban Rebelliona critical event that closely aligns with historical texts. From there, it's up to you as the player to shape history. Your actions influence outcomes across various provinces like Jizhou, Yuzhou, and Jingzhou. Each decision affects supplies, military power, public charisma, and intellectual prowess.

Balancing decisions is key in keeping the game engaging. Flure could result in the of your reign or even death. As you progress through the game, you unlock different character cards based on wartime choices that introduce a card battle element a system with strghtforward rules for taking down opponents before they do the same to you.

One of the most thrilling aspects was the almost rogue-lite approach to death, where despite dying in-game, your progress remns intact between sessions. Unlocking provinces once is enough; they stay open for future attempts without needing restarts or sacrifices.

For those who enjoy PvP player versus player matches, Reigns: Three Kingdoms offers an opportunity to challenge other players online. I found the experience rewarding but also challenging as it requires skill and strategy while battling agnst strangers. The game seems relatively less popular at the moment; there were occasional no opponent was found messages.

Despite this limitation, my seven-hour journey through Reigns: Three Kingdoms provided me with an that brought China's Three Kingdom period to life through history-infused gameplay and artistry. This game truly offers replayability as each decision leads to unique outcomes, making it a delightful experience for fans of Chinese history and strategy games alike.
